I saw it in Brookstone a few days ago and was totally sold on the idea of “self-setting”. Well, that’s actually not very true. Pros: Large display with adjustable levels. The blue display also looks a lot better than the usual green or red. Cons: Brookstone is intentionally vague about what they mean by “self-setting”. No, it doesn’t connect to the US atomic clock as some reviewers say. It was merely pre-set in the factory, and sustained by the battery. If you look at their manual ([...]) you will understand why: if you “reset” the clock, it won’t reset to the current time. I didn’t realize this until I was trying out the features and inadvertently changed the original clock. I thought by “resetting” the clock it will adjust back automatically. Nope. This was the feature that I thought was worth the price tag, but now I just feel cheated. The clock does use a battery (pre-installed). So it is not really “self-setting”. While it stores the day/month/year info, there is no way to show them on the clock screen. And, it’s a lot easier and more tempting to turn of the alarms than snoozing: the button to turn it off is a lot taller than the snooze button. Overall, it’s not a bad one even if it is not really automatic. I just wish they were more straightforward about what it really is.

Great clock a college student!, By

I originally bought this clock for myself. I liked the fact that I could set two wake up times — weekends and school mornings. The display light can be adjusted from bright to dim. We have had the electricity turned off suddenly and the clock resets itself automatically. Of course I thought of this clock when I sent my son to college. Most kids like to use their cell phones, but cells phones have to be charged. If the electricity goes out in the dorm, the cell phone is not getting charged or a regular electric clock will not have the correct time. The TimeSmart clock is perfect — electricity goes out and it resets itself, kick out plug and it goes to the back up battery. No excuse for him to miss class. I just bought another one for my high school sophomore who has been depending on his Zune charger/clock, but it doesn’t work all the time. Have had my clock for the past 3 years and have not had any problems. Love it!

NOT A SELF-SETTING CLOCK RADIO,
This review is from: TimeSmart Self-Setting Alarm Clock
This clock is not self-setting. Instead, it has a battery back-up installed at manufacture with the clock present to EST and the daylight savings time enabled. If you don’t live in the east, you must reset manually when the clock arrives. Although the battery on the clock is still good, the clock becomes ‘confused’ periodically and the time is off by several hours. The time must be reset manually and the manual reset is more complicated than on the typical clock. I paid the price for this clock because I thought it would be convenient for a senior citizen friend. Any battery back up clock radio would have been just as good, and better clock radios are available at the same or lower clsot. |
